When pharmacist Charles Alderton invented Dr Pepper in Waco, Texas, nearly 150 years ago, he probably never imagined his creation would be enjoyed by millions of people around the world – much less that it would become a fan-favorite shake flavor at Whataburger.

We, however, can see that it was destined to be!

We’ve brought back that iconic shake. The Dr Pepper Shake has returned for a limited time.

Ready to Serve New Neighbors

From curbside and delivery service to new menu items, Whataburger is always looking for innovative ways to best serve you. That’s why we’re thrilled to share our plans to refresh our restaurant design and expand into new markets, starting with new restaurants in Tennessee and Kansas City. Whataburger operates restaurants in 10 states, from Arizona to Florida, and will continue to grow new and existing markets. In fact, 15 new restaurants will be built this year and 25 restaurants next year, in addition to remodeling many existing restaurants.

“We’re always excited to hear we have so many fans across the country, and we are looking to open restaurants in Tennessee, Kansas City and our existing markets as part of future expansion plans,” said James Turcotte, Senior Vice President, Real Estate. “We don’t have specific details to share about plans for any particular city at this time, but will be happy to share when the time is right.”

In addition to expansion, Whataburger also will begin franchising our restaurants for the first time in almost 20 years. This will allow us to open more restaurants in more areas – more quickly and efficiently – while providing job opportunities and investing in the communities we serve.

Restaurant Refresh

Along with plans for expansion, we’re proud to roll out a new look for our restaurants to better serve our guests, increase our capacity, and continue to deliver the quality food and friendly customer service our customers expect from us.

Whataburger will introduce new restaurant models and remodels that have a reduced environmental impact by using renewable resources when possible, LED lighting and more efficient equipment for 24-hour use.

More restaurants will feature elements of this new look soon. The remodels will vary based on the needs of each location, ranging from kitchen and exterior upgrades in some restaurants to major updates in others. What’s not changing? The iconic elements we’re known for. How far would you go for a father-son bonding experience? Greg Haugen decided 50 miles sounded like a good place to start.

Shoes tied, backpacks strapped, and sunscreen slathered, Greg and his 12-year-old son, Jack, took off on a 50-mile quest from their home in Arlington, Texas, to Greg’s mom’s house in Springtown.

Their goal? 50 miles. In two days. On foot. Fueled by Whataburger.

The orange-and-white roofs were a beacon for the pair, which stopped at every Whataburger on their #Whatajourney – nine in all.

Decked out in Whataburger T-shirts, the duo made it from Arlington to the first Whataburger in Fort Worth in less than two hours.

Greg chowed down a Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit. Jack got a sugar high from a cinnamon roll and Strawberry Fanta, the first of many he would guzzle on the walk. Only 47ish miles to go!

“The goal is to get something different at each stop,” Greg told a growing group of social media followers during stop No. 2, while they cooled off inside another Fort Worth restaurant.

The real goal? Time together. There were jokes and guy talk and serious conversations about church and what life will be like for Jack when he enters seventh grade in the fall. And lots of talk about their next Whataburger stop, and the cold, cold air-conditioning awaiting them.

They broke for lunch in the city of Hurst. “Just an easy-breezy 6 miles since the last stop.”

In a video-game, phone-focused world, this adventure gave the father-son duo quiet time outside. After seeking out the best path across a creek, Greg and Jack talked about getting past obstacles in life. “That led to even more great conversations about life,” Greg says.

Last stop of Day 1 in the town of Saginaw. The Haugens snapped a photo with the Whataburger staff, who were quick to serve up meals – and cold drinks.

At a hotel just across the street, Jack crashed quickly, and Greg nursed blisters on his feet.

“I was worried … that the second day wasn’t going to happen,” he says.

But Day 2 dawned with new energy – and a renewed commitment to their quest.

Counting American flags – 326 in all – took the focus off their feet. And they played word games and sang songs.

“Any time there’s a chance for adventure and a chance to be silly, that’s the route I’m going to take,” Greg says.

Jack branched out to Orange Fanta at stop No. 8, a different restaurant in Saginaw.

Seven hours and 12 miles later, stop No. 9 “was simply spectacular!”

Family and friends surprised them, and Family Members at the restaurant in Azle threw a party to celebrate their journey. “We walked in to applause and cheers,” Greg says. “We felt like Whatakings!”

The trek allowed Greg to really see things along a route he’s traveled his entire life. “We’re missing a whole lot of what’s going by when we don’t take an opportunity to look around us,” he says. “I’m going to try to be more in the moment from now on.”

Whataburger’s Chorizo Taquito is now back for a limited time.

What’s chorizo, you might ask? Chorizo is a type of ground sausage that derives its bold taste and deep red color from a fresh blend of spices. It’s an ingredient gaining in popularity and now available in all Whataburger restaurants to add a kick to our breakfast classic.

First launched in the fall of 2017 as a limited time offer, the Chorizo Taquito features a soft flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, Mexican-style chorizo and a slice of American cheese.

The Chorizo Taquito is available for late night and breakfast from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m.

Fans savor every crack of the bat at the Phoenix Cactus League

Last year, almost 2 million people came out to share in the excitement of Major League Baseball’s Cactus League Spring Training in Phoenix, Ariz.

And while fans are there for the baseball – there are more than 250 games in the area in just a few weeks – quite a few make sure to stop in at Whataburger.

Brian Clute grew to love Whataburger when he was a college student in Arizona, where his dad still lives.

Now, he and his son, Thomas, live in Camas, Wash. – without a Whataburger in sight. So when they came down to Arizona for Spring Training and a visit with Thomas' grandfather this year, Brian made sure all three generations stopped in for some Whataburger.

“I’m here with my dad and my son to watch some Spring Training and eat some Whataburgers,” he says.

Fueling Up

Whataburger has been part of the Phoenix landscape since 1962, and there is a restaurant less than a mile from Tempe Diablo stadium, which means the store is often jammed with baseball-hat-wearing fans enjoying a meal together before or after a game – not to mention players who stop in to fuel up.

Sometimes the Family Members working at the restaurant get a little star struck – and sometimes their own families do. “We have the players coming in before and after they play,” says Deatrice Burden, who works at the restaurant by the stadium. “My son, Isiah, thinks it’s cool. He’s 10, and he’s like ‘Can I come to work with you today to see the baseball players?’ “

At the Game

On the field, Whataburger is part of the excitement too, sponsoring teams and setting up booths at games to pass out coupons and share in the fun with fans.

“It’s great for us to be a part of it all,” says Haley Proulx, a brand development coordinator for Whataburger. “We’re baseball fans too, so being out at the games – connecting with our fans there – it’s such an important way for us to be able to give back to the community.”

After taking an inventory of numerous orange-and-white-striped plastic table tents he had…acquired…from a lifetime love of Whataburger, Joseph Mora decided to come clean – and return his table tent collection to his local Whataburger in La Vernia, Texas.

Mora, 23, is about to tie the knot, and decided he needed to come clean. “It was time to get my life straight before I get married.”

Mora placed all 150+ table tents into a plastic Walmart bag (we hope it was recycled after buying some of his favorite condiments) and handed the bundle over to a Whataburger Family Member who was equal parts awe (“Are these all yours?”) and grateful for the bounty.

To thank him for his sacrifice and congratulate him on his upcoming marriage, Whataburger is sending him some gear to help soften the blow of losing his orange-and-white table tent collection.

College student keeps track of the good times – with Whataburger cups

Houston resident Foster Mohning can remember every visit he’s had to Whataburger. And he has the cups to prove it.

To date, more than 150 of them.

What started as a casual ritual has turned into a serious commitment for this college student. “My best friend and I started going to Whataburger every Tuesday a couple of years ago,” Mohning says. It was their time to catch up despite the hectic pace of college life.

One day, he walked out of the restaurant with his cup full of iced tea – as people do – and realized how much his friendships were built around time spent at Whataburger.

So, he used a ballpoint pen to scribble the date on the lip of the cup, and took it home.

Then, he did it again. And again. And again.

Now, two years later, he has more than 150 Whataburger cups stacked in the corner of his bedroom. Each one with the date of the visit written on it in ballpoint pen.

Don’t worry; his collection is washed. Well, OK, rinsed.

Friendly Rituals

For Mohning, saving the cups is about documenting the memories of good times with friends. It isn’t just the burgers and fries (or the iced tea); it’s the people.

He and his best friend still meet up for their Tuesday catch-up whenever they can, and now he’s expanded his circle to include colleagues at a retail electronics store. The work crew has a standing Friday date to unwind together to begin their weekend.

“We started hanging out on Friday nights after work, and now it’s something we do,” he says.

The Whataburger team greets them by name each week – their orders queued up and ready for the grill as they walk in.

And Mohning, of course, saves his cup each week.

Mohning stands at 6-foot-seven-inches, and two of his three cup stacks tower over him. His third is well on the way.

The stacks are leaned against the wall, commanding a corner of his bedroom all the way up to the ceiling. It’s a unique way to decorate, but Mohning is committed. “I’ve moved twice,” he says. “I just broke down the stacks and brought them with me.”

The only trick to keeping the collection on track? He has to buy a large drink – a whopping 44-ounces – each time so the cups stack up.

Southern Vibe

As a society reporter at the Houston Chronicle, Amber Elliott is one of the first people to know about up-and-coming wedding trends.

So when she noticed couples incorporating Whataburger into their big day – whether it was late-night food deliveries or wedding party gifts – she knew something was brewing.

“Whataweddings have been catching on,” Elliott says. “Brides are really starting to personalize their weddings.”

That sparked an idea for Elliott and the editorial team at the Houston newspaper. When the Chronicle held a photo shoot featuring three brides in high-end gowns last wedding season, they provided a little Whataburger flavor.

That meant taking cues from recent Houston weddings: orange-and-white stainless steel tumblers to keep bridesmaids going as they dance the night away, Whataburger sunglasses for the Instagram-perfect look, and – of course – a few Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits for late-night fuel.

The result? A unique blend of beauty and biscuits with a playful, southern vibe.

“We created a fantasy here,” Elliott says. “Not everyone can afford a dress that costs the same as a (car). So it’s good to see those things juxtaposed with something you can go out and get right now. It’s a bit of fantasy and a bit of real Texas roots in a wedding story, which is unexpected.”

Every other year, Whataburger restaurants compete for a chance to attend this event, where restaurants vie for the gold medal – and thousands of dollars in prizes.

WhataGames is three days of non-stop activity for the competing teams. Restaurant teams show off their kitchen skills, and their customer service talents. Maintenance techs fix things on the fly. Everyone tests their knowledge of the company history and culture in a high-production quiz show.

The ‘Chileman’ tells all: Why and how chile peppers make you feel the burn

His official title is Regents’ professor in horticulture and director of the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, but Paul Bosland is more commonly known by another name.

The Chileman.

Bosland has built a career studying, cultivating, and educating others about chile peppers of all kinds. So we had him school us on chiles, which we use in everything from Salsa Verde to Picante Sauce to our Sweet and Spicy Bacon Burger and Spicy Ketchup.

“Each chile has a different kind of heat profile,” Bosland explains. “Some heat hits you right away, then vanishes; other times, the heat comes on slow and lingers. Some chiles hit you in the very front of your mouth, while some won’t seem hot at all in your mouth – but then almost sear your throat.

Lately, Chorizo has become a cultural force even outside Texas, with YouTubers creating odes to it, and even a Valspar-brand paint color named after it.
Attending a baseball game in Milwaukee? A “chorizo” character has been a regular competitor in the famed sausage races at Milwaukee Brewers baseball games since 2007.
Baseball and chorizo are linked in at least one other way as well. In the 1940s, a Californian named William Pena coached his nine sons on a baseball team called the Carmelita Chorizeros (“The Sausage Makers”).
In the hit Pixar movie “Coco,” Hector is often referred to by his nickname “Chorizo.”
Research shows that people who eat a good breakfast have better moods than those who don’t. In other words: A #ChorizoTaquito is good for your happiness.

The Whataburger Basketball Tournament celebrates 60 years of competition this year and in honor of that milestone, we wanted to share some fun facts with our fans.

More than 30,000 spectators, including college scouts and coaches, are expected to take part in the action-packed three-day tournament Dec. 28 - 30, where 3,000 Whataburgers are served each year. Taquito Takeover: How One Teacher Won Big for Her School

Katie, a high school teacher at Washington High School in Arizona, won Whataburger’s Snapchat Contest.

She scored 2,000 taquitos to share with her students, $1,000 to donate to the Julie Foudy Scholarship Foundation, and – best of all – she got to take over Whataburger’s Snapchat for the day!
