To create the perfect Whataburger mum, we partnered with DIY blogger Haeley Giambalvo from DesignImprovised.com. Follow her step-by-step directions below to create your own. 

What You’ll Need:

• 4 large heart backers (12” x 11.75”)
• 5 large mums (6” wide)
• 2 rolls of orange acetate ribbon (1 5/16” wide)
• 2 rolls of white acetate ribbon (1 5/16” wide)
• Various styles of ribbons
• Trim and accessories
• Hot glue sticks
• Glue gun
• E6000 glue
• Stapler
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Sparkly orange pipe cleaners
• Whataburger fry box

Step 1:

Overlap two heart backers to create a “W” and line up the holes. Staple together to secure.

Step 2:

Insert a large mum in each of the five holes, and secure in place with a generous amount of hot glue.

Step 3:

Make striped “wings” for the Whataburger “W” by cutting tenn 3-inch” strips of orange acetate ribbon and eight 3-inch” strips of white acetate ribbon.

Starting with the orange ribbon, layer five 5 orange and four 4 white ribbons, making the orange a little wider than the white. Overlap each ribbon and secure with a bead of hot glue. Create a rounded edge,  and trim as needed with scissors.

Slide each of the “wings” under the mums (in between the backer and the mums), and secure to the front of the cardboard backer with hot glue.

Step 4:

Create ribbon loops to edge the mum by cutting 7-inch” long strips of acetate ribbon. You will need 12 orange strips and 14 white strips.

Create a point by bending the ribbon in half and overlapping at the bottom. Make sure the shiny side of the ribbon is facing the outside. Staple in place. Repeat with the rest of the ribbons.

Add the ribbon loops around the outside of the wreath with hot glue. Nestle them under the mums, and alternate between orange and white.

Step 5:

Create the back of the mum by overlapping the two backer hearts similar to step 1; Staple together.

Step 6:

Cut a variety of ribbons three-feet  3 ft. long to hang from the mum.

Overlap at the base of the mum backer, and secure with a generous amount of hot glue. Avoid covering up the holes for the mums.

Step 7:

Personalize your mum ribbons with letter stickers. We spelled “whatamum!”

You can add additional embellishments, accessories, and trim to jazz up your mum.

Step 8:

Create a harness for your mum using a sturdy, thick piece of ribbon. Measure the ribbon to the appropriate length to fit around the neck. Attach the ribbon to the top of the mum backer with staples and a generous amount of hot glue.

Step 9:

Finish the mum by adhering the front hearts to the back hearts with a generous amount of hot glue. You can use a strong adhesive such as E6000 to make the mum extra secure. For the finishing touch, add a Whataburger fries box with sparkly orange pipe cleaners bent in half to look like fries!

To get you started, we’ve created seven official Whataburger pumpkin carving stencils.

You need:

• The official Whataburger Pumpkin Carving Stencils, which can be downloaded below
• Pumpkins
• Pumpkin carving tools, including a sharp knife and an awl/poker
• Scotch tape
• A clear workspace, a trash bin, and a large pan for seeds if you want to roast them
• Lots of Whataburger! Because what’s a Whataburger pumpkin carving party without it?

Step 1: Prepare your pumpkin

With all your supplies laid out, cut a hole in the top of your pumpkin and clear out all the flesh and seeds. You may choose to toss all of the “guts” of the pumpkin. Or, you can wash the seeds, spread them on a baking sheet, drizzle them in oil, and then toast them in the oven at 325 degrees for 45 minutes for a snack when all the fries are gone.

Step 2: Set your stencil

Next tape your Whataburger Stencil of choice on the pumpkin. Begin poking holes around the stencil with a pumpkin-poking tool or awl to create an outline of your design.

Step 3: Start slashing! (or carving)

Remove the stencil. Carve out the design by following the dots with a sharp knife. Be careful!

Step 4: Light and enjoy!

Finish up your design, drop in a candle, and go ahead and glow with pride. Your Whataburger pumpkin is perfect for any Halloween gathering. Meow.

Materials

Plain styrofoam wreath

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

T-pins

Scissors

Stapler

One roll of 2.5 inch ribbon (Any color or pattern)

10-15 pieces of ribbon of varying sizes and colors; cut to approx. 3 feet in length

80-100 Fiesta Medals. Don’t forget your Whataburger medals!

Fiesta-themed embellishments

Step one

Using two T-pins and glue, secure the end of your 2.5” ribbon to the back of the Styrofoam wreath. Wrap the ribbon tightly around the entire wreath, finishing on the back once it is fully covered. Secure the end with a T-pin and glue.

Step two

Gather your medals! From Whataburger-orange to Fiesta-pink, anything goes. Start at the middle of the top of your wreath. Open the medal pin, add a small amount of hot glue to the back of the medal ribbon, and stick the pin straight into the wreath, holding the medal in place for a few seconds so that the glue sticks. (You’ll want to start the first medal on the inner rim and work your way around.)

Step three

Arrange your medals in a diagonal pattern for the cleanest look. Depending on the size of your wreath, you will likely attach two rows of medals.

Step four

If you’ve been hoarding medals for years, you can cover your whole wreath with them. If not, strategically plan an open space to affix Fiesta-themed embellishments, such as flowers or a mini-sombrero. Look for something light that you can easily affix with a glue gun.

Step five

Step back and look for any holes to cover. You can add in extra medals, small flowers, or glittery embellishments to make your wreath as over-the-top as your Fiesta celebrations.

Step six

Cut a length of ribbon or poster board the width of the bottom of your wreath. Staple your pre-cut three-foot streamers of ribbon to it so they hang down. Then glue the completed piece to the back of the wreath so the ribbons hang below. If you have thin streamers, staple a cluster of them together first, then staple the cluster to the ribbon.

Step seven

Make your friends show their shoes! Display your custom-made masterpiece on your front door, your office cube, or any place in need of a little Fiesta spirit.
