From Monday, Sept. 18 through Monday, Oct. 9, guests who visit any of the 150 Whataburger locations across Houston and donate $1 to benefit the Houston Food Bank, will receive a thank-you coupon for a free Whataburger with the purchase of a medium fry and 32-ounce drink.

“One in five children in Houston lives in a food-insecure household,” said Houston Food Bank President/ CEO Brian Greene. “That’s why we continue to make it our mission to serve children and families in the area with the nourishing foods they need. When children have access to the healthy food and well-rounded meals, they are set on a path for a bright future.”

Every dollar raised during the fundraiser will be donated to the Houston Food Bank’s child hunger programs in support of Whataburger’s Feeding Student Success program. This is Whataburger’s signature community program operating at the intersection of food insecurity and education, focusing on helping students at all levels of education achieve their goals and dreams.  

“We’re working to ensure Houston area children have easy access to food, which is vital to give them the best chance to succeed in school and beyond. Whataburger is proud to join forces with the Houston Food Bank again this year as we continue to work at addressing local food insecurity,” said Mark Allen, Whataburger Brand Leader “Together with the Texans, we can make a difference in helping our community thrive.”

The fundraiser will begin with a special kickoff event on Monday, Sept. 18 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Whataburger restaurant located at 18190 Gulf Fwy in Friendswood. Officials from Whataburger, the Houston Texans and the Houston Food Bank along with Texans Legend Travis Johnson, TORO and Texans Cheerleaders will be in attendance.

“As the need continues to grow, so will our efforts to put an end to hunger for children and families in our community,” said Houston Texans President Greg Grissom. “We are looking forward to partnering with Whataburger for another year of fundraising that will make it possible to provide food for even more Houstonians who benefit from the meaningful work done by the Houston Food Bank.”

Since the launch of the fundraiser in 2015, the Houston community has impressively raised nearly $975,000, which totals more than two million meals that the Houston Food Bank has provided, with each dollar yielding about three meals for Houstonians in need.

So when it came time to start planning her Christmas decor, Vivian knew she wanted to celebrate her hometown burger place, a Whataburger restaurant led by Operating Partner Philip Covos and his team.  Whether she was pulling up at the curb or walking in, Vivian said she always felt welcomed and connected. 

Way back in the summer, she started planning ahead for the holidays. 

No blue Christmas for Vivian: She was going orange.

“We were eating Whataburger for about two weeks straight, and I'm like 'you know what, I'm going to do a Whataburger Christmas tree'," Vivian said. 

“We always say Whataburger feels like home, and it's so great that she's taking a sense of Whataburger to her house on a bigger level than just burgers,” said Field Marketer Sarah Marston, who helped Vivian gather some extra Whata-swag for her masterpiece. “We loved Vivian's Christmas spirit and how it centered around Whataburger!”

When the Whataburger teams in Midland saw Vivian's epic tree, they knew she had to join them on their float in Midland's holiday parade. Dressed in her Whataburger sweater and flashing orange-and-white lights, she beamed and waved

“It's been awesome. I'm honored, my kids are excited,” she said. “This has brought a lot of excitement into our lives, and I want to tell them I do appreciate it. ”

Featuring many of the top teams in Texas and Oklahoma competing in three divisions: Orange, Boys Blue and Girls Blue, the highly anticipated tournament is set to take place at school gymnasiums across North Texas, with more than 20,000 spectators expected to attend.

The Orange Division will compete at Mansfield Legacy High School, a favorite court for participating teams and their fans. The 1,700-seat Chisholm Trail High School arena will host the Boys Blue Division, and the 2,200-seat Saginaw High School arena will host the Girls Blue Division. The winning team in each division will not only go home victorious, but will also earn a $1,000 scholarship from Championship Basketball, Inc. and the Whataburger Basketball Tournament.

“For our 65^th annual tournament, we’re welcoming back fan favorite teams and looking forward to hosting some new schools this year,” said Tom Rogers, Whataburger Basketball Tournament Director. “Many of these school teams are nationally ranked, and it’s always exciting to see so much growing basketball talent right here in our region. We’re honored once again to provide a platform to showcase these young athletes.”

In its storied history, the Whataburger Basketball Tournament has provided a national spotlight for players to sharpen their skills and impress scouts, with some moving on to professional careers as players and coaches in the NBA. Tournament veterans include current NBA players Marcus Smart for the Boston Celtics and Myles Turner for the Indiana Pacers, as well as Sam Cassell, assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

For Noah Lozano and Alan Cruz, trumpet-playing rivals in the middle school band competition scene, not so much. 

“We didn’t like each other,” Alan said.

“At all,” Noah agreed.

But when Noah and Alan found themselves in the same mariachi group at PSJA North Early College High School in Pharr, Texas, rivalry became an alliance.

“He's like a brother to me,” Noah said.

“What made him different from everyone else for me is that I could rely on him for everything,” Alan agreed.

The friends bonded over their love for mariachi, the challenges of navigating high school in a pandemic, and then, their jobs at Whataburger.

Alan started as a Team Member at the restaurant down the street from their high school, and he talked Noah into joining him soon after.

“Nobody does it like Whataburger,” Alan said. “Whataburger is always there for me.”

"I have always had a passion to make this unit better, in every sense,” said Noah. “That is why I feel so prideful about this. I love all the opportunities they give me, I love all the people that work here… I love this job." 

Alan and Noah’s pride in their friendship, music and Whataburger all came together in harmony last summer when the mariachi team was returning home from a performance. 

The choice of Whataburger for lunch was unanimous. But for Alan and Noah, not just any Whataburger would do. It had to be *their* Whataburger. 

Once there, the group wasn’t about to just eat and run. Noah convinced the mariachi directors that an impromptu concert was in order. Soon, the dining room echoed with gritos. 

“It was crazy,” said Alan, who has become the group’s lead vocalist. “Everybody just started clapping and cheering. For weeks afterward, I was getting compliments.”

In its storied history, the Whataburger Basketball Tournament has provided a national spotlight for players to sharpen their skills and impress scouts, with some moving on to professional careers as players and coaches in the NBA. Tournament veterans include Sam Cassel, assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers, as well as current NBA players Marcus Smart for the Boston Celtics and Myles Turner for the Indiana Pacers.

As part of that community support, Whataburger announces the launch of the Whataburger Feeding Student Success Scholarship program, its $500,000 commitment to help students planning to attend a college, university and not-for-profit vocational school achieve their dreams.

To further support that commitment, Dr Pepper has contributed an additional $100,000 to the Whataburger Feeding Student Success Scholarship program. A total of $600,000 in scholarship funding is available.

The scholarship will be awarded to 120 students across Whataburger’s footprint. Recipients will receive a non-renewable $5,000 scholarship to be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and housing for the 2022-2023 academic school year.

It’s part of Whataburger Feeding Student Success, the company’s signature community program at the intersection of food insecurity and education.

The first year’s scholarships will be awarded to Black and other racial minority students as part of a $1M commitment Whataburger made in June 2020. With the scholarship funding, Whataburger has exceeded that commitment.

With Whataburger and the Houston Texans on our team again, this fundraiser will help keep our community’s children nourished and on the path to bright futures.”

To address these challenges and ensure children have the resources they need to be healthy and successful, every dollar raised will be donated to the Houston Food Bank’s child hunger programs in support of Whataburger’s Feeding Student Success program. This is Whataburger’s signature community program operating at the intersection of food insecurity and education and focusing on helping students at all levels of education achieve their goals and dreams.

The three-week fundraiser will begin with a special kick-off event on Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Whataburger located on 7411 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77074.

Since the launch of the fundraiser in 2015, the Houston community has raised an impressive $705,988, which totals more than two million meals that the Houston Food Bank has provided, with each dollar yielding about three meals for Houstonians in need.

UTSA Reopens Former Roadrunner Pantry as the “UTSA Whataburger Resource Room”

That’s why we’re proud to partner with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to reopen its Main Campus resource room – now officially the UTSA Whataburger Resource Room – stocked with even more food items, toiletries, school supplies, and essentials than before. With help from our friends at the San Antonio Food Bank, nutritious food is now available again to students, free of charge, year-round.

The UTSA Whataburger Resource Room is open to all UTSA students. A similar Whataburger resource room operates at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

The UTSA Whataburger Resource Room is part of the company’s Feeding Student Success Program, a corporate-wide community relations initiative that supports students of all education levels through school resource rooms, scholarships and community involvement. The UTSA Whataburger Resource Room is the second to open in 2021, with others planned in the future.

Uniting to Help Tigers Roar to Success

Karmel Reeves has heard the question more than once.

“They ask, ‘are you cooking today?... my cupboards are a bit empty’,” she says. “Those are the conversations that are very common.”

Reeves, the 2019-2020 Graduate Student Government Association President at Grambling State University, knew issues of food insecurity for college students went far deeper than the friends she could invite to share her table.

So she, and other student leaders like Steven Wilson, Grambling’s 2019-2020 SGA President, rolled up their sleeves and began laying the groundwork to support their fellow students.

Wilson said his predecessor in student government had a tiny food pantry in his closet, but an assessment survey on the campus showed much more was needed.

“Could we go a little bit further with this and actually start a food pantry or food bank initiative – and make it a big deal for the student body that will be all-inclusive and all access?” he wondered. The students reached out to regional food banks, found a location on campus, and spent nearly two years developing a plan.

The students pitched their detailed plan for a Tiger Resource Room to Whataburger leaders including CEO Ed Nelson, who unanimously threw the company’s support behind the project. The Tiger Resource Room Powered by Whataburger opened in the Grambling Student Union during the 2020 fall semester, providing emergency food supplies and basic hygiene needs.

“Whataburger is committed to helping students achieve their dreams of a college education and reach career goals. All too often, these can be impacted by the struggle for basic needs,” said Ed Nelson, Whataburger President. “We hope the Tiger Resource Room will provide students healthy food and essential supplies to allow them to successfully continue on their college education journey.”

Grambling students will run the resource room, developing management and business skills as they work with partners including the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana and SodexoMagic, the university’s food services contractor. As the dream becomes a reality, leaders say their biggest success will be helping students realize there’s no shame in asking for help.

From pancakes to pens, the Whataburger Resource Room helps students fuel their dreams

Consider that most students taking a full load of classes are juggling part-time work to supplement loans, and it’s easy to understand why they might be standing in the grocery store aisles trying to decide between buying toothpaste or lunch meat on a given week.

Whataburger is here to help.

In partnership with the University of Texas at San Antonio and the San Antonio Food Bank, Whataburger has opened the doors to a new Whataburger Resource Room – a place where UTSA students can go when they’re trying to make ends meet and are facing food insecurity.

Co-branded with fun Whataburger and UTSA decor, the room is stocked with perishable and non-perishable food items and toiletries, including canned goods and dairy products. There’s also Whataburger-branded school supplies like backpacks and pens, bottled water, and fun orange-and-white sunglasses, hand sanitizers, and similar items.

And while students can’t order their favorite Whataburger meal at the Resource Room, they can pick up Whataburger-brand pancake mix, chips, mustard and ketchup, cookies and even fruit chews.

Best of all? It’s 100% free for students who need a boost.

 “Whataburger knows that the dream of a college education can be quickly derailed when students struggle with basic needs,” said Pam Cox, vice president of Human Resources and Brand Communication for Whataburger. “Our support of this pantry is not just an investment in UTSA students, but also in their communities and future generations of Roadrunners.”

The San Antonio Food Bank is working with Whataburger to ensure the shelves stay stocked year-round.

“We are appreciative of Whataburger and the San Antonio Food Bank for their support and longstanding relationship with UTSA,” said UTSA President Taylor Eighmy. “These efforts will help us address the food insecurity needs of many students, allowing them to focus on their educational goals. Partnerships like this are helping us to eliminate obstacles that can impede student success, and Whataburger’s commitment toward that goal is to be commended.” 

The Whataburger Resource Room officially opened Feb. 20 with a celebration attended by leaders from Whataburger, the San Antonio Food Bank, and UTSA.

While located at the downtown campus, The Whataburger Resource Room is open to all UTSA students. A similar resource room is open at the UTSA main campus, where it has served more than 10,000 students since it opened in 2017.

Breathable short-sleeved woven fishing shirts, long-sleeved lightweight performance crew shirts, boat shorts and caps are all part of the new lineup. True to Academy’s Magellan Outdoors brand, the apparel was made with outdoor enthusiasts in mind, and some of the unique designs pay tribute to the menu items fans can get 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Whataburger.

“We had fun working with Academy and their Magellan Outdoors brand to design Whataburger apparel we know our fans will be hooked on,” said Rich Scheffler, Whataburger Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “We hope our Family Members and fans enjoy hitting the waterways sporting some of these brand-new items.”

These seniors navigated virtual and in-person instruction, and different learning models, as their high schools adapted to challenges from the pandemic. Then, they masked up and went to work serving up Whataburger hospitality to their communities. 

For many of them, their part-time jobs were crucial to their families, as other members of their household lost income due to the economic downturn. 

“This year has particularly demonstrated the important role that profitable companies play in the community,” scholarship recipient Abigail Turner, who works at Unit 997 in Houston, said. “Whataburger is a great example of this. We are providing food to people in our community, and jobs to people like me.The Whataburger Family Foundation is another example of how a profitable business can have further impact on the community.” 

Turner will be attending Southern Illinois University this fall to study business, joining the 385 other Family Members whose loads are just a little bit lighter this fall.

“This scholarship will not only lessen the impact of my educational costs, but it will also make a huge impact by helping me move forward to pursue my dreams in business management,” she said.

That's right, Hell's Kitchen. 

This season, just six years after she first walked into a Whataburger kitchen, Megan is one of 18 up-and-coming chefs from around the country competing in "Hell's Kitchen:Young Guns," airing Monday Night on FOX, where she is being put to the test by a famously volatile celebrity chef.

It's a test Megan is taking in stride, thanks to the skills she learned thanks to those late-night Whataburger crowds.

"Gordon Ramsay will scream at you, but busy is busy," says Megan.

Her first Whataburger boss says it's no surprise to see Megan keep her cool in Hell's Kitchen. Dana Edwards, now an Operating Partner for Whataburger in McKinney, Texas, says she knew from Day One that Megan was something special.

"Working with Megan, she always impressed me because she was so mature beyond her years," says Dana. "She was a total rock star, and she could do anything she set her mind to. You put her in any position, and she would master it just like that."

Dana wasn't the only one noticing Megan's star quality. After 3 years at Whataburger, Megan went to work in the kitchen at a hotel in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. A server there told her his roommate was a casting director, searching for chefs to compete in the 20th season of Hell's Kitchen. He encouraged Megan to apply. 

She went for it -- sending in pictures of her plated dishes and videos showcasing her cooking. Megan impressed show producers enough that she was called for an audition, and ended up headed to Las Vegas.

Along with other contestants, Megan was on what she thought was a tour of a Hell's Kitchen museum, getting ready to watch a movie. Instead, the curtain pulled up to reveal Ramsay, and the set for the show. The "tour" was over -- and the competition was beginning.

"It's a little intimidating, especially when you've never been in that sort of environment, and then to be in front of Gordon Ramsay on top of that... it's a lot," she says. "But the energy on set was awesome, actually. Everyone was so eager to do their absolute best."

Megan is sworn to secrecy about the show's outcome, but in early episodes, her focus and quiet leadership combined with her culinary skills to earn her the respect of fellow competitors, and praise from the notoriously critical Ramsay.

"I feel like staying calm is like the biggest difference in being successful or sinking a ship," Megan says. "The biggest thing for me is just trying to stay calm even if I'm freaked out."

It's a mindset that Megan's former boss says is often forged in the Whataburger kitchen.

"Some of the skills that Whataburger can build, especially for a young person, is grace under fire and being able to handle difficult situations," Dana says. "But also making the best out of the time that they have, and having fun."

“I went to college to become a coach, and I started working at Whataburger as a student. When I graduated, I had $50,000 in student debt. Now, I’ve paid it all off. I bought my house, and I bought my dream truck, a GMC All-Terrain 4x4 Edition.

When I first started at Whataburger, it was because I needed money. But then it turned into something I enjoy. My mother is a teacher. My brother’s a librarian. My uncles are coaches. Teaching runs in my family, and I implement those skills into my job every day. I’m doing what I always wanted to do, but in a different way than I imagined.

You can do it.’ And every week, she came and she helped me. When people have that confidence in you, you learn to believe in yourself.

I feel excited. I don't know what the future holds, whether I become an Area Manager or I’m in the corporate office. But I know that whatever it is, I'm with Whataburger.”

“Do you like developing people and watching them grow? That’s what we do here. Management at Whataburger is about helping people and watching them become better versions of themselves. It’s hard work, and it requires a lot of dedication. But the benefit of being able to take care of yourself and your family makes it worth it.

When my wife and I bought our house, I was 20 years old. As we were meeting the neighbors, one couple asked what we did for work and I told them we were managers at Whataburger. They replied: ‘Oh, so your parents bought this house for you?’ And we said: ‘No, we did this.’ Now our house is paid off.

I have friends who worry about money because they’re in debt. But I never worry. Whataburger will be here for our financial future.”

“I started at Whataburger 12 years ago. Two years into the job, my daughter—who has a rare disease called CRPS—was about to have her third or fourth operation. I was young, going through a divorce, and didn’t have much money. The operation was going to cost $4,300. If she didn’t have it, my daughter would be in a wheelchair the rest of her life.

As I sat in the hospital, not knowing how I was going to pay the bill, I heard the phone ring at the nurse’s station. A few minutes later, a nurse came in and said, ‘Your work just paid for your daughter’s surgery.’

The Whataburger Family Foundation took care of everything! Plus the balance from a prior surgery! My daughter was young, but she understood this was a big deal. Whataburger made my daughter feel important. They made me feel important. They showed they cared for us. It was the greatest gift.”

Longtime franchisee BurgerWorks will open a training center and its first restaurant this year. Additional locations are planned for 2022.

The training center will be at 5905 Constitution Ave. Remodeling of the existing building on the site will begin soon, with scheduled completion this summer.

The first restaurant will be in the InterQuest Marketplace, with groundbreaking toward the end of the summer for a planned opening before year-end.

Groundbreaking and opening events will be held to celebrate new restaurant locations. The company plans to release information on 2022 growth plans later this year.

Along with new restaurants, BurgerWorks will bring exciting career opportunities for leaders in the community. Hiring in Colorado Springs will begin in the next few months for positions including Restaurant Manager and Operating Partner. In early fall, hiring will begin for Team Leaders and Team Members.

“A great Whataburger customer experience starts with exceptional employees, which is why our entry into Colorado Springs will begin with building a training center and recruiting caring leaders who can motivate and reward teams,” said William Tamminga, owner of BurgerWorks. “We compensate well and have a robust training program to teach the needed skills. Even without restaurant experience, leaders can succeed at our Whataburger restaurants with the right attitude and ability.”

Whataburger Operating Partners are the heart and soul of the company. They are business leaders who run multimillion-dollar restaurants and have fun doing it. BurgerWorks plans to hire more than 100 employees in Colorado Springs this year. A website with hiring information on working at Whataburger in Colorado Springs, including competitive benefits and salaries and opportunities for career advancement, will be posted soon.

Founded more than 70 years ago, Whataburger now has more than 850 locations across 10 states, operating 24/7, 364 days a year. 1. Secure Aida cloth in embroidery hoop.

The Build

Whataburger’s new Cobb Salad comes with your choice of a warm, diced Grilled Chicken, Whatachick’n or Spicy Chicken filet, on a bed of Red Roma lettuce blend topped with shredded carrots, shredded cheddar cheese, three crispy bacon strips cut into pieces, grape tomatoes and a sliced hard-boiled egg.

“The Cobb Salad is a great combination of flavors,” said Whataburger Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Rich Scheffler. “Our take on the classic is made to order in our kitchens with fresh, high-quality ingredients and the chicken filets our customers know and love.”

"Something just told me to ask for her phone number," Smith said. "I was sure she gave me a fake phone number, so I pulled over in the parking lot and called it right there."

It was the right number, and turns out, Melissa Maese was the right girl. 

"My younger years, I was a mess," Cody said. "But she just stayed by me and gave me hope -- she loved me until I could love myself."

So when it was finally time to propose 15 years later - Cody knew it couldn't be anywhere else but the Whataburger drive-thru. He asked for our help surprising her in the drive-thru, and of course we were happy to go the extra mile.

We decorated a check-back tray, put Cody in a Whataburger uniform, and prepared some extra touches to make sure the day was just perfect. Then, Cody asked Melissa to come pick up food for a picnic, and we got hidden cameras rolling.

This time, Melissa was the one in the drive-thru placing the order for two Justaburgers, thinking she was getting food for a family picnic, with no idea Cody was inside in disguise -- and this was one delivery that was serving up pure love. 

The 10 winners will get a custom denim jacket featuring exclusive patches made by Oxford Pennant in collaboration with Whataburger. The five patches include a representation of the iconic A-frame architecture, a Whataburger cup, french fries, an orange-and-white pennant and the Whataburger logo, and winners will get to pick additional Oxford Pennant patches to make their jackets truly original creations.
