Dylan and Sharon were both students at the University of Texas at Austin when they met ... and learned they were both fans of stopping in for their favorite Whataburger meal after a night out.

A native of Corpus Christi, Sharon has a unique tie to our two-story Whataburger by the Bay location. Her older sister had her wedding rehearsal dinner at this location almost ten years ago, and her younger sister had her post-wedding celebration at the very same restaurant. As the middle child, Sharon knew she and Dylan could keep this true-love tradition alive!

Devin and Lesley met online, where she dazzled him with what he calls “her strong meme game.” Both first responders, the couple bonded over their desire to help people and their night shift work schedules. Not to mention late-night trips to Whataburger. It became a staple in their diet and on their dates. Devin has two kids who enjoy "Water Burger" just as much as they do.

According to them, being surrounded by orange and white on their big day was the Spicy Ketchup on top of the #1!

Colton and Viviane’s story started off like any good modern love story. They swiped right. They met at Whataburger.

And here they are.

Since they first connected, the couple has supported one another through new jobs and several moves – including an out-of-state adventure for Viviane. Through it all, Whataburger has been a constant. Each time Viviane arrived back in Texas to visit Colton, Whataburger was her first stop. It is, she says, her taste of home.

Texas, and a new career, called Viviane back home – and she and Colton decided to begin their latest adventure as newlyweds. While discussing venues, they heard about our Whatawedding contest and knew it was meant to be!

It’s no secret that Tayler loves all things Texas – especially Whataburger. She’s a ninth generation Texan, stemming from a long line of ranchers dating back to Austin’s Old 300.

The one thing that has surpassed her love for Texas? Her love for her fiancé, Geoffrey, who just happens to hail from France. The couple has bonded over their love of learning together, committing to teaching each other something new every day. The very first thing she taught him about being a proper Texan? Know your Whataburger order!

Tayler and Geoffrey have had so many dates at Whataburger that they lost count. With so many treasured memories surrounding the venue, they couldn’t think of a place more meaningful to start their lives together as husband and wife. And what’s next for this orange-and-white loving duo? A tiny Texan to turn them into a trio Naturally, the couple is due March 2 … Texas Independence Day.

Xander and Amy had their first date at Whataburger – curled up in a booth and talking for hours on end.

It was a natural first date spot for Xander, whose coworkers had nicknamed him “Whataburger” because, well, he was always eating Whataburger. Since then, Xander has taken Amy’s three boys under his wing, earning a new nickname: “Xandad.”

Xander encouraged Amy to return to school, and proudly attended her graduation ceremony this past December, with celebratory Whataburger in hand. As the couple began planning their wedding, Amy heard about the Whataweddings contest – and took a chance entering the couple as a surprise. It paid off – and the couple is heading to their happily ever after … with plenty of extra fries.

Matt and Julie knew they were made for each other when they bonded over their love of trying new experiences – and eating Whataburger. Just call it the foundation for a perfect match. Together the couple has visited Whataburgers all over Texas, where they enjoy Whatachick’n Strips with gravy or Patty Melts with jalapeños – just to keep things spicy.

Matt and Julie are celebrating 10 years together with their two daughters. Their Whatawedding ceremony was as unique as they were – complete with a shake to share.

After a traditional wedding ceremony and reception, Arianne and Jordan Moore felt pangs of Whatahunger. When the newlyweds and their wedding party entered the restaurant, they spontaneously decided to stage a Whatawedding.

After Mr. and Mrs. Moore walked down the (restaurant) aisle, one of the groomsmen officiated their second wedding of the day.

After all, it’s the place they became friends.

“It’s Whataburger – when I see the orange and white stripes, it makes me so happy,” Peyton Hammond, one of the group, says.

Fateful Day

When the first Whataburger in Tuscaloosa, Ala., opened in February 2018, the line to get inside circled around the building and down the block.

The #Whatafriends group – University of Alabama freshmen Alex Brehm and Leah Brasington, sophomore Peyton Hammond, and junior Blake Hudson and Jake Anderson – were part of the crowd.

But not all together. Not yet.

They had all arrived early hoping to get a silver University of Alabama table tent, a special commemorative item Whataburger was giving out to the first 100 people in line. Not all of them scored that special swag. (“I even tried to buy one!” Brasington says.) But, they managed to start a conversation that is still going strong.

Friends Hudson and Anderson were waiting in line together when they struck up a conversation with the others, all of them sharing stories about their love of Whataburger.

“It just started from there,” Hudson says. “We all sat together – that just might be because Leah still wanted our silver tents – but we respect that,” he laughs. They chatted for more than two hours – and then came back later that night for Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits.

Now, three months later, they meet at Whataburger once or twice a week, sometimes more.

Comfort Food

At the opening and even now, Brehm – who moved from San Antonio – sends photos of himself at Whataburger to his family.

“They messaged me back, ‘We know you are mostly a happy person, but this is the happiest we’ve seen you in a long time,’” he says.

Like Brehm, Anderson, Brasington and Hammond hailed from Texas, Whataburger’s home state. So even though they’re full of ’Bama pride, Whataburger helps them get that much-missed taste of home.

Anderson, who comes from Tyler, Texas, puts it simply: “It’s nostalgia,” he says. “I guess I go four or five times a week. And when all of us get together, it’s great because Whataburger is open 24/7. We never feel rude about sitting here a while – everyone here is so nice. It’s like a family.”

Ultimately, the 38-year-old helped ferry more than 200 people to safety in his freshly refurbished 20-foot boat.

A few days later, Estrada returned to the Gulf Coast to cook meals for first responders and deliver supplies he had collected.

Estrada’s service to his country and his community earned him a U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal and inspired a longtime friend, Gus Rodriguez, to nominate him for Whataburger’s #WhatafloatContest. As the contest winner, Estrada will ride on the Fort Sam Houston for Military Children’s Float during the Texas Cavalier’s Parade.

“He risked his life already overseas, and he didn’t hesitate to help,” says Rodriguez, noting the airman’s tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. “He’s always doing whatever he can in the community.”

A Commitment to Service

The honor came as a surprise to Estrada, who served 19 years in the Air Force and works as a vehicle management specialist. He returned home to Lackland Air Force Base in early 2017 from a deployment to Kuwait.

Previously, Estrada served in direct support of front lines during a 10-month deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, working with infrastructure support, aerial surveillance, convoys and vehicle management.

Though military training gave Estrada the grit to venture through floodwaters in pouring rain and work long days on little sleep, Hurricane Harvey was a difficult experience. He doesn’t like to revisit the fear and devastation he witnessed.

“It was a whole experience you can’t prepare for,” he says, recalling the rescue of residents from a nursing home where the ground floor was submerged.

“It’s an emotional thing,” he says. “You don’t forget the loss of hope in the eyes of people.”

After four days on rescue duty, Estrada returned home to San Antonio and held his wife and sons tight. Then, he went right back to work helping, securing donations of cash, toiletries and food.

Two days later, he and his sons hauled more than $1,500 worth of food and supplies to Rockport and Ingleside to cook meals for first responders.

Grateful to Help

Viviana Estrada says the rescue experience made her husband a better person, even after he ’fessed up that it wasn’t a military assignment. He knew she wouldn’t want him to place himself in danger only a few months after his deployment to Kuwait, so he fibbed.

“I’m really happy for him to be able to do stuff like that,” she says. “He was so grateful he was able to help other people.”

Viviana and their sons, Isaiah, 11; and Daiden, 9, will join him in the parade, which will wind down the San Antonio River April 23.

And to the delight of all 300 of her guests, she got her wish. Whataburger Family Members made a special midnight delivery to keep the party going.

“From that point on, our guests could have cared less about the open bar or the band,” she says. “This is what everyone loved. This is what everyone still talks about!”

So this March, as the Hodges prepared to celebrate their one-year anniversary, Lauren concocted another perfect plan: more Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits.

Lauren placed a slightly smaller Whataburger order this time and prepared a honey-butter experience like no other, complete with a sequined tablecloth, crystal cake platter and fresh flowers.

Lauren ordered 15 Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits just for the photos. “When I went to pick them up, I wanted one to eat immediately, so I had to order one more,” she says.

And then she and Lorne enacted their own twist on the wedding-cake tradition.

The shoot quickly became a group effort, which didn’t surprise the couple at all. “Whataburger has always played a big part in my life,” she says. As a child, she and her family would stop on their way to the coast every year. In college, she and her roommate were there every week. Now, she and Lorne and her young nephew stop in at their Whataburger regularly.

When the photo shoot was over, Lauren bagged up the extra Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits for her office. “I shared them with co-workers later,” she says. “We do not waste Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits!”

Now that’s a happy ending.

Nataly and Favian of Spring, Texas, spent their Valentine’s Day 2018 with us, and it was pretty special. 

Nataly decided to surprise Favian with a Valentine’s dinner for two – a real treat since the couple has three kids. So her niece dropped her off at their local Whataburger before he got home from work. But not before she left him a Valentine’s Day card with a special note inside.

Nataly started her love letter simply enough:

“Oh my Valentine

You are so sweet

I’m not sure ’bout you

But I’m ready to eat.

Let’s have some fun

A dinner just for 2

I’ll get you a #3, no bun

Anything to show my love for you.”

And then things got spicy.

“So clean on up, and put on somethin’ purty

Meet me at our favorite place

No earlier than 6:30.”

Fortunately, he knew just where to go. And Nataly greeted him with a decorated booth – complete with candles and flowers – and his new favorite order: The Mushroom Swiss burger (Whatasized) with an unsweet tea and a side of Jalapeno Ranch for his fries.

He was a little sheepish when he first walked in, she says, but they both loved it. “This is who we are,” Nataly says. “We don’t need fancy … we just wanted to be together, the two of us.”

Of course, Whataburger has been part of this couple’s love story since the beginning. “For our first anniversary, we flew to Corpus Christi solely to visit the two-story Whataburger, and we ate every meal there for three days,” Nataly remembers. (They had to pull this photo off of her circa 2008 video camera!)

And now, they go to their neighborhood Whataburger three or four times per week with their family.

And while the kids didn’t get to go along on this whirlwind night on the town, Nataly and Favian do have a special keepsake to remember the night: a #12 table tent, marking that this was their 12^th Valentine’s Day together.

Not that they’re worried about forgetting. “We could have gone somewhere and waited 45 minutes to get seated, and then spent $50 or $60 on dinner,” Nataly says. “But instead we got to spend that time together and eat our favorite meal. It was perfect.”

As hundreds of guests dined and danced at an upscale wedding in downtown Houston, the most memorable meal of the night began at 11 p.m. when waiters in black ties appeared, offering silver platters piled high with Whataburger Taquitos bursting with potato, egg, and cheese and the restaurant’s signature Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits.

“People loved it. We ran out in a short amount of time,” says Savanna Gray, a Houston wedding planner and owner of En Vogue Weddings.

Unique food twists like this leave a lasting impression on guests.

Indeed, Amanda and John Peterson’s love for Whataburger went viral earlier this year when John, the groom, was caught on video stealing an impromptu wedding dance with his beloved bride Whataburger meal at their reception. John cut a rug to to Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” hit with his #1 combo in one hand, a Whataburger bag in the other, and fries in his mouth.

“He was excited about his bride AND his Whataburger,” says Clint Brock with Candle Light Films, who captured the viral video. “I love it when people celebrate each other extraordinarily.”

Kelsey Comstock with Emily Clarke Events in Dallas executed the late-night Whataburger snack for guests. Each meal was served in bag sporting a personalized decal with the couple’s wedding date and the phrase “What-A-Night.”

2. The Nifty Gifties:

Amanda Blissit, owner of Blume Haus Events in San Antonio suggests stuffing a little Whataburger love in your welcome bags for out-of-town wedding guests at their hotels.

Whataburger gift cards, available at the online Whatastore, are great for the late-night snacks. Also available? Men’s and women’s T-shirts, coffee mugs and even bottles of Fancy and Spicy Ketchup, to celebrate a love that’s either (or both).

The Breakfast Bundle includes a vintage style mug for your morning cup of Joe, two boxes of Whataburger pancake mix and a super soft, cotton/poly blend shirt for lounging around.

3. The Whataburger Cake:

Robert Jucker, owner of Three Brothers Bakery in Houston, is an award-winning baker who is more than familiar with the layers of detail required to execute a unique idea. So when a couple asked him to construct a cake thathighlighted the groom’s love for Whataburger, Jucker reached for the orange and white fondant.He molded it into the iconic A-frame Whataburger restaurant,complete with tiny details such as window advertisements and Flying W signage. The cake was such a hit that the bakery also made a Whataburger smash cake for the couple’s child on his first birthday.

4. The Wedding Decor

Add a little touch of the Flying W love to your big day by personalizing Whataburger bags and tumblers with your own bride-and-groom decals (decals not available through Whataburger).
