True love blossoms out of a breakfast meet-cute 

Don and Barbara’s unique love story proves it's never too late for a sweet beginning to start at Whataburger. 

At a Whataburger in North Richland Hills, Texas, just outside of Fort Worth, a simple breakfast turned into a second chance at love. 

Two years ago, widower Don Land, now 89, walked in just before 11 a.m. to order his favorite Whataburger breakfast: Biscuits and Gravy. At the next table sat Barbara, now 85, also a widow. A kind comment about her shoes sparked conversation, and before long, the two strangers realized this wasn’t just small talk, but the start of something special. 

 "I was just thinking, Oh, he's nice looking, and I thought he was friendly," Barbara said. "The next day we had lunch — and every day since then, we've seen each other." 

Savoring the date

That first meeting happened Nov. 28, 2023. The date stuck. Every month on the 28th, Don and Barbara return to the Whataburger where they met. They patiently wait for their table to open up before sitting down together. The tradition has become a monthly celebration of both the day they met and the life they’ve built since. 

Earlier this year, Don and Barbara married and held their reception right back at Whataburger, surrounded by family, friends, balloons and flowers arranged by Operating Partner Brandon Ortega. 

"Our colors were blue and white, and he had balloons all over the place," Don said. “It was unbelievable. We had 30 people here in Whataburger! Who has their reception dinner at Whataburger? We do.”
