A Lifetime of Father-Son Memories, Served at Whataburger

Daniel Blizzard grew up in a tight-knit religious family in Pensacola, Florida. His father, William Pierce Blizzard, was a former Army officer and Korean War veteran, and Daniel served in the Navy. When Daniel was a kid, they formed a special bond over shared meals together at Whataburger. 

“He was a big goofball — loved to tell jokes and see who he could make laugh,” Daniel said. “But every time we would share a meal, we could always have an honest conversation and say what's on our minds.” 

When William was diagnosed with cancer in the early nineties, he asked Daniel to take care of him as he underwent chemotherapy. 

One day, about a year after his diagnosis, William called Daniel with a request. He wanted his favorite meal from Whataburger: a Sausage Breakfast on a Bun with Hashbrowns and Coffee. 

“I knew he would love it, because he always complained that hospital food was the worst,” Daniel said. 

As they ate Whataburger together, they had a long conversation about the past and their family. They shared their love for each other, and William told Daniel to take care of his mother so she wouldn’t struggle too much once he was gone. 

“He felt like he had so much to say, and he only wanted to tell it to me,” Daniel said. 

About an hour after their meal, William slipped away, but the final Whataburger meal and conversation remains the most meaningful moment of Daniel's life. 

“Just being able to bond over something that I knew he truly loved was priceless,” Daniel said. “That’s one of the best memories of him that I'll ever have.”
