Nation’s Top Teams to Compete in 62nd Annual Whataburger Basketball Tournament
Boys Orange Division to move to a more centrally located venue
FORT WORTH, Texas – Dec. 9, 2019 – The Whataburger Basketball Tournament, hailed by USA Today and Sports Illustrated as one of the nation’s top holiday tournaments, returns to North Texas for its 62nd year from Thursday, Dec. 26 through Saturday, Dec. 28.
For more than 20 years, the Boys Orange Division, which features the top teams in the state and nation, has called W.G. Thomas Coliseum home. The tournament has expanded with more teams centrally located in the Metroplex and this year, the Boys Orange Division is moving to Mansfield Legacy High School to offer more convenience for participating teams and their fan bases, both now and in the future.
“W.G. Thomas Coliseum has been a big part of our tournament family since 1998. We’ve grown from our eight-team tournament to a now 48-team basketball showdown, so as you can imagine, we needed a venue that could better meet our growing needs,” said Whataburger Basketball Tournament Director Tom Rogers. “Mansfield Legacy provides a more centrally located venue with plenty of parking, easy access off 287 and a second gym to allow for more games. The facility includes chair-back bleachers and seating near the court, which makes for a more exciting atmosphere to watch the competition up close.”
More than 20,000 spectators, including college scouts and coaches, are expected to take part in the action-packed, three-day tournament at the three area high school gyms. In addition to the Boys Orange Division at Mansfield Legacy, the 1,700-seat Chisholm Trail High School arena will host the Boys Blue Division and the 2,200-seat Saginaw High School arena will host the Girls Blue Division. The winning team in each division will not only go home champions but will also earn a $1,000 scholarship from Championship Basketball, Inc. and Whataburger Tournament.
In its storied history, the Whataburger Basketball Tournament has provided a national spotlight for players to sharpen their skills and impress scouts, with some moving on to professional careers as players and coaches in the NBA. Tournament veterans include Sam Cassel, assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Over the years, we’ve seen so many talented teams across the state and beyond, but there’s nothing like that renewed excitement when we watch a new group of players showcase their talents on the court in front of their fans and family,” said Whataburger Regional Director of Operations John Dolan. “We’re proud to offer a platform for these student athletes to achieve their highest potential. There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than with some great basketball!”
Fans interested in witnessing history can purchase tickets at each of the tournament’s three venues:
