On the Road Again

Meet the man in the Whataburger Food Truck

If you’ve ever seen the Whataburger Food Truck rolling through your town, you know it’s hard to miss. How could a 36-foot-long Whataburger on wheels not be the talk of the town?

Having spent 25 years working as a chef and owning several restaurants, Sam Dickey, Whataburger Food Truck Program Manager, is used to the excitement. He first joined the company as a project manager, but soon he realized he wasn’t cut out for the 9-to-5 life.

“It was the first time I ever had an office job, and I didn’t really enjoy it,” Dickey says. “I like to get out and do something a little more physical.”

Goin’ places Whataburger’s never been

When Whataburger introduced its food truck in 2020, it was an opportunity for Sam to get back into a kitchen—and on the road. Now, he spends at least half his time traveling, mostly to sites of upcoming restaurants in new markets.

Beyond groundbreaking events, Sam’s taken the Whataburger Food Truck on all kinds of trips: college sports tailgate tours, NFL games, and even the Country Music Awards. But his favorite events are those where he gets to serve kids in the communities they visit.

“We have a lot of charitable events where we go and feed the Boys and Girls Club,” he says. “They get super excited, and we bring them lots of fun stuff.”

His job is full of early mornings, long days, and being away from home for weeks at a time. But it’s worth it for him to be out interacting with people and seeing them react to the food, whether they’re tasting Whataburger for the first time—or the first time in a long time.

“When people really enjoy the food, and they have memories of eating and enjoying people’s company… they get really emotional,” Sam says. “You can see in their face how excited they are. That’s a really cool feeling.”

The Whataburger Food Truck has been such a hit everywhere it goes that the company is adding two more. That means Sam and his team are rolling into 2026 with a total of three trucks, allowing them to serve up even more goodness around the country.
