Our All-Time Favorite Love Story: Celebrating Whataburger’s 75th Anniversary
Boy meets burger
On Aug. 8, 1950, entrepreneur Harmon Dobson opened the first Whataburger on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas. At a time when most burger stands sold sliders for a nickel, Whataburger was a monster by comparison, both in size (5-inch diameter buns, needing both hands to eat) and price (25 cents at first, then 35 cents soon after).
Harmon’s hope was that customers would fall in love as he had: discovering a product so novel and delicious that they’d return to it again and again. It worked on both counts. By creating a made-fresh-to-order experience, Whataburger planted roots with homegrown customer loyalty. And Harmon himself stepped away from earlier business ventures to make the permanent move to Texas and commit (professionally) to Whataburger.
Whataburger will probably turn out to be my ‘life work.
— Harmon Dobson’s journal entry, October 8, 1951
Boy meets girl
Grace Williamson, a widow with a young son, comforted Harmon when his brother (who was her neighbor) suddenly passed. Love blossomed. Grace moved to Corpus Christi and the two were married on March 11, 1955. Their family and Whataburger prospered together over the next 12 years: two more children and 40-plus restaurants throughout Texas (plus one in Pensacola, Florida). On April 11, 1967, Harmon tragically passed away in a plane crash.
Rather than sell the company, Grace brought on a board of directors and became its chairman, hiring multiple presidents throughout the years to handle day-to-day business. In the 1990s, her eldest son Tom became Whataburger’s CEO and president, and her two other children, Lynne and Hugh, eventually joined the corporate ranks. “Harmon would have been extremely proud of that,” Grace said at the time.
Known as “Lady Grace” to Whataburger’s employees, who we call Family Members, Grace led through years of expansion, making sure the company never lost its personal connection to its roots. Health issues caused her to scale back her role, but she still attended Whataburger functions and was named Philanthropist of the Year for the Coastal Bend region in 2003. Lady Grace passed away on September 1, 2005, but Harmon’s legacy and Grace’s love live on. Family Members attending her service wore orange ribbons in her honor.
It’s amazing how successful one man’s dream can be when the passionate heart of a mother is driven to take care of her Family Members.
— Grace Dobson’s eulogy by former Whataburger president Preston Atkinson
Whataburger meets the world
Over the course of 75 years, Whataburger’s menu has evolved from exclusively burgers, to include chicken, breakfast, salads, desserts, All-Time Favorites and highly-anticipated limited time offers—adding up to tens of thousands of possible customization combinations. All are available 24 hours a day, 364 days a year (closed Christmas Day), at more than 1,080 restaurant locations in 16 states. And each is still prepared as that first Whataburger on Ayers Street: fresh ingredients, made when you order, just like you like it.
Whataburger’s greatest asset? Their people and passionate fans—the ones who wrap their babies in Taquito paper, propose over a #1 with Fries, bring their dates for after-prom Shakes, and create art inspired by the brand’s iconic orange-and-white stripes. Every day, these fans turn ordinary moments into extraordinary ones, fueling a cult-like following no other burger brand can rival. And as the brand grows, so does the love. Fans literally wear their Whataburger pride on their sleeve with merch from the Whatastore, spot the famous orange-and-white roof in Texas-set movies and shows, or scroll social media to find the Whataburger Museum of Art, podcasters debating burger supremacy, and influencers savoring their very first Patty Melt.
It’s global sizzle for a place that feels like a second home to 51,000 Family Members, rooted in humble values of pride, care, and love. Whataburger’s 75th anniversary celebrates both the pomp and circumstance: the heart and soul shared by Harmon and Grace Dobson that remain at the core of the company, and the extraordinary fandom that expresses their devotion back to the brand that loves them so.
