Sylvia Chávez is kind of like the mayor of a village that’s raising children in Las Cruces

Her real job title is community schools administrator, but Sylvia Chávez is kind of like the mayor of a village that’s raising children in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Her school, Lynn Community Middle School, doubles as a community center. Doors stay open well after classes dismiss each day – even on weekends and in summer – and Chávez is often there.

Extended hours find students doing homework and enjoying snacks. Chávez also welcomes parents into the school’s community room, where they can use computers and get info about jobs and health and wellness.

But wait, there’s more!

Chávez’s school also houses medical clinics and is working on a program to teach students skills such as bicycle repair and app development.

We’re proud to celebrate Sylvia Chávez, a Whataburger Hometown Hero.

Whataburger has focused on its fresh, made-to-order burgers and friendly customer service since 1950 when Harmon Dobson opened the first Whataburger as a small roadside burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas.
