A Look Inside One Superfan’s Guest Room

Shelves full of Whataguy toys, Whatacomix issues, and all kinds of other memorabilia. Framed close-ups of burgers and fries on each wall. Orange-and-white bedding with round pillows reminiscent of customized burgers: NO TOMATO, NO ONION, JALAPEÑOS.

When visiting friends or family members sleep in Dustin Herb’s Whataburger-themed guest room, they’re in for a treat.

“People who stay the night say they wake up hungry,” Dustin says. “They always want to hit a Whataburger in the morning.”

Reunited and it Tastes So Good

Dustin grew up in Texas, blissfully unaware that Whataburger wasn’t everywhere. After he joined the Navy and moved away, he realized how much he missed it.

“It was always like, I knew I was home when I got back to Texas and saw a Whataburger,” Dustin says.

He occasionally got in his Whataburger fix while stationed in South Carolina, then just a four-hour drive from a location in Florida. But after separating from the Navy, he again found himself in another Whataburger-less state.

But Dustin was determined to get back to Whataburger territory. Opportunity struck in Arizona, and his love for Whataburger was able to fully blossom again. In a way, the room is helping him make up for lost time.

“I was eating there a lot and posting pictures, and people were fascinated with my love for Whataburger,” he says. “I think that kind of pushed me to keep taking it further and further.”

There’s much to admire in the room, but Dustin’s favorite piece is a patchwork quilt chronicling several special promotions, limited time offers, and eras.

“Thank you for 75 years of delicious food, warm hospitality, and unforgettable memories,” Dustin says. “Your dedication and passion shine through in every burger.”
