Whataburger and Baylor Athletics Celebrate Teachers and Community Impact
On a recent game day in Waco, Texas, the energy inside Foster Pavilion, went beyond basketbal. As fans gathered to watch the Baylor Bears men's basketball, the focus briefly shifted from the court to the classroom.
Along the concourse, Whataburger hosted a series of fan experiences - offering giveaways, photo opportunities and custom airbrush hats all while conversations centered on something bigger than the game itself: the educators shaping local students’ lives.
That focus came to life through the WhataTeacher campaign, a partnership between Whataburger and Baylor Athletics now in its third year. After more than 700 nominations from across Central Texas, three teachers were selected for their impact both inside and outside the classroom.
- Kaitlyn Kavanaugh, a gifted and talented teacher at Woodway Elementary.
- Paula Hoover, a music teacher at Hillcrest PDS Elementary.
- Mario Guevara, known to students as Coach G, a physical education teacher at Parkdale Elementary.
During a first half media break, two of these educators in attendance stepped onto the court, and were recognized in front of thousands of fans. It was a brief moment, but one that reflected years of quiet, consistent work—showing up for students each day.
“Through the Whatateacher campaign, Whataburger has elevated community engagement over the past few years as part of our partnership with Baylor Athletics. During basketball season, we receive hundreds of nominations recognizing outstanding teachers across Central Texas, which speaks volumes about the impact educators make every single day.

Later, during a halftime segment with John Morris, the conversation turned to the broader effort behind the campaign—connecting education, opportunity and community in ways that extend well beyond a single game.
For those in attendance, the night offered more than a final score, as the Baylor Bears men's basketball secured a win. It was a reminder that behind every student success story is an educator, and sometimes, a moment to recognize them in the spotlight.
